Police strengthen marijuana eradication drive in Benguet

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, Feb. 24(PIA)--The Benguet police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency strengthen drive against marijuana eradication campaign following the discovery of new plantation sites in two towns in the province.

Benguet Provincial Police Office Director Colonel Elmer Ragay reported that operatives uprooted and burned on site fully grown marijuana plants valued at P3.57 million more than 10 new sites of marijuana plantations in the municipalities of Sablan and La Trinidad last week.

Sablan Municipal Police Station Chief, Capt. Salvador Anas said some 11,900 fully grown marijuana plants valued at P2.38M were uprooted in four different areas at Sitio Taleb in Barangay Banangan on Monday, February 17.

Anas said a member of the Barangay Informant Network tipped the Sablan police about the marijuana plantation, prompting an immediate operation in the area located at least three hours walk at the forested areas and two hour-hike from a barangay road.

Meanwhile, La Trinidad Municipal Police Station Chief of Police Major Cleff Vencio said the police discovered on Feb. 17 four sites of marijuana plantation sites at Sitio Tuba in Barangay Wangal with a total land area of 1,975 square meters. Operatives uprooted and burned on site 2,750 fully grown marijuana plants valued at P550, 000.

On Feb. 20, the LTMPS conducted marijuana eradication in seven new marijuana plantation sites with a total land area of 600 square meters at Sitio Kolong, also in Barangay Wangal. The destroyed marijuana plants were valued at P640, 000.

No cultivator was arrested during the operations but the police are conducting follow up investigation as the areas are all new sites of marijuana plantations in the province.

The eradication operations were in coordination with the Benguet Provincial Police Office - Drug Enforcement Unit, Police Regional Office - Regional Intelligence Unit and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency - Cordillera. (JDP/RMC- PIA CAR)
