QUITO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Ecuadorean government announced on Friday that the number of COVID-19 cases in the country had risen to 91,969, with 5,897 deaths.
The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) said that 1,432 new cases and 20 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
According to authorities, the capital city of Quito has become the epicenter of the virus in the country, with the highest number of cases, followed by the city of Guayaquil, the former epicenter of the virus.
Local authorities attribute the escalation of cases in Quito to the failure of residents to comply with the recommended preventive health measures.
On Aug. 5, the National Operations Committee authorized the reopening of 40 of the country's beaches after five months of quarantine, but only six were reopened on the recommendation of local authorities.
