QUITO, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador on Wednesday reported a record number of new daily cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection, after tests detected 2,249 cases in the previous 24 hours.
According to the Ministry of Public Health, the new cases pushed the total number of people who have tested positive since the start of the outbreak to 129,892.
In the same 24-hour period, 45 more patients died from the disease, taking the death toll to 7,375.
Another 3,796 fatalities are believed to be probable COVID-19 deaths, but lack verification.
The South American country has seen exponential growth in infections since a state of emergency expired nine days ago, which lifted lockdown restrictions to contain the spread of the virus.
Across the country, 12 of the 24 provinces are reporting high numbers of new cases, with the capital Quito showing the steepest upward curve after detecting 1,502 new daily cases of infection, taking the total to 32,543.
