BOGOTA, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 infections in Colombia rose to 818,203 in the past 24 hours after tests detected 5,147 new cases, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection said Monday.

The death toll climbed to 25,641 after 153 more fatalities were reported over the same period of time.

A total of 722,536 patients have so far recovered, the ministry added.

The country's largest cultural event, Barranquilla Carnival, scheduled for early 2021 will be held virtually due to the pandemic, the carnival's director Carla Celia confirmed Monday.

"The Barranquilla Carnival will not go the traditional way. We're restructuring ourselves with a lot of digital strategies and we're sure that we will be able to celebrate it in a virtual way," she said.
