QUITO, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador reported on Monday 1,764 new COVID-19 infections and 19 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the accumulated number to 402,060 cases and 14,016 deaths, the Ministry of Public Health reported.
Another 5,226 deaths are considered to be COVID-19 related, but not verified, according to the ministry.
The new infections were centered in the provinces of Pichincha and Guayas, with 845 and 215, respectively.
Quito, capital and epicenter of the pandemic in the country, continues to have an accelerated rate of increase in cases, with hospitals working at capacity.
Meanwhile, the Institute of Microbiology of the University of San Francisco of Quito announced via Twitter on Monday that new and more contagious variants of the coronavirus are increasingly being detected in the South American country.
So far, 1,245,822 people have been vaccinated, among them 981,620 with their first dose and 264,202 with their second, according to the health ministry's latest report.
