BUENOS AIRES, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Late substitute Jose Sand converted a 93rd-minute penalty as 10-man Lanus earned a 1-1 draw at Independiente in Argentina's Primera Division on Saturday.

The hosts went ahead after Sergio Ortiz's 30-yard drive was parried clear by goalkeeper Lucas Acosta and Martin Cauteruccio reacted fastest to knock in the rebound.

Lanus were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when Luciano Boggio was booked for a second time for simulation.

But the visitors refused to surrender and Sand, who replaced Pedro de la Vega in the 79th minute, earned his team a point by holding his nerve from the penalty spot after a Luciano Gomez hand ball.

Lanus remain seventh with 29 points from 17 outings, 11 points behind leaders River Plate. Independiente are 21st in the 28-team standings, 11 points further back.

In other Primera Division fixtures on Saturday, Platense won 1-0 at home to Belgrano, Sarmiento drew 0-0 at Gimnasia and Atletico Tucuman edged to a 1-0 home win over Arsenal Sarandi.
