Peru: Runoff election with a split vote

The runoff election for the presidency of Peru will take place on June 7 between candidates Keiko Fujimori of Fuerza Popular (who received 17.18% in the first round) and Roberto Snchez of Juntos por el Per (who received 12.03%). On that date, more than 27 million eligible Peruvian voters will go to the polls.

The landscape is split for both candidates.

In the first round, Fujimori won support in the coastal departments of Tumbes and Piura and the jungle department of Ucayali, while Snchez led in the highlands in departments such as Huancavelica, Cajamarca, Apurmac, and Puno. Lima and Callao (the former with more than eight million voters and the latter with 860,000) voted for former candidate Lpez Aliaga. They are expected to back Fujimori, but nothing is guaranteed.

Both candidates present different approaches in their platforms. Fujimori proposes greater security, institutional order, and continuing the economic model; while Sanchez focuses on agrarian reform, constitutional change, and has promised a pardon for former President Pedro Castillo, among other things.

Currently, both candidates are campaigning in different regions of the country, trying to secure the swing votes from the first-round candidates. It is anticipated that in these elections, as in previous ones, the public vote will be against a particular candidate rather than in favor of the proposals they may put forward.
