Economic emergency decree shields Venezuelan economy from U.S. tariffs impact: vice president

CARACAS, April 10 (Xinhua) -- A new economic emergency decree proposed by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government this week will shield the country's domestic production and economic growth from the impact of U.S. sanctions and tariffs, Vice President and Oil Minister Delcy Rodriguez said Thursday.

"It is a preventative measure to guarantee, defend and support domestic production," Rodriguez said while presenting the decree to Venezuelan legislators at the national assembly, adding that the measure aims to "ensure that domestic production continues its course" following five consecutive years of economic growth, especially in light of the U.S. new tariff policy.

The vice president described the "reciprocal tariffs" signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 2 as "insane," saying that this will be remembered around the world as the launch of "an unprecedented global trade war" unleashed by Washington.
