Morocco make history with first U20 World Cup title (VIDEO, PHOTO)

The North African country defeated Argentina 20 on Sunday in Chile to claim their first ever FIFAU20 title

Morocco's U20 national football team secured a landmark 20 victory over Argentina in Santiago, Chile, on Sunday, to win the 2025FIFAU20WorldCup. The triumph marks the North African side's first world title at this level and comes months after the team took second place at the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The win makes Morocco the second African country to win the title after Ghana, who were crowned in 2009 after losing finals in 1993 and 2001.

The breakthrough came in the 12th minute when Yassir Zabiri curled home a freekick to give Morocco the lead. He then doubled the advantage 17 minutes later with a closerange finish.

In a press statement following the match, coach Mohamed Ouahbi reflected on the difficult years the team had endured. He also thanked King Mohammed VI for his efforts to develop football in the country.

"Without him, we would not have achieved what we have today," he said.

The Moroccan King congratulated the team for its historic World Cup victory by telegram, according to the BBC. King Mohammed VI their "spirit of cohesion and harmony, and a wonderful professional performance," calling the achievement a source of pride for the nation and Africa.

Othmane Maamma earned the Golden Ball after being named Player of the Tournament, while final match hero Yassir Zabiri received the Silver Ball as the competition's second-best performer.

Argentina, already sixtime winners and appearing in their eighth final, ended a 42year run of winning U20 finals since their last loss in 1983.

Morocco reached the final by defeating France on penalties after a 11 draw in their semifinal. Argentina made it to the final by edging out Colombia 10 in the semifinal, with a strike from MateoSilvetti.
